Introduction to Uṣūl al-Fiqh

The Companions (al-Ṣaḥābah, رضي الله عنهم) were the first generation to engage directly with revelation after the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. Their legal reasoning (fiqh) and methodological foundations (uṣūl) form the backbone of Islamic jurisprudence. This lesson explores how the Ṣaḥābah used the Qurʾān, the Sunnah, consensus (ijmāʿ), analogical reasoning (qiyās), and juristic discretion rooted in objectives (taʿlīl, maqāṣid), while also exercising caution toward weak or problematic reports.

Far from being simplistic literalists or uncontrolled rationalists, the Ṣaḥābah developed a balanced legal methodology grounded in revelation, understanding, and responsibility.
