The science of isnād did not cease with the early generations; rather, it evolved into highly structured systems of preservation through athbāt, fahāris, and maʿājim. These works represent a critical yet often underexplored dimension of ḥadīth scholarship, wherein later scholars meticulously documented their transmissions, teachers, and scholarly inheritances.

This course offers a systematic introduction to these later-era sources, focusing on their structure, function, and scholarly significance. Students will learn how to read and interpret these texts, extract chains of transmission, and identify the maqrūʾāt and masmūʿāt within a narrator’s scholarly network. Through guided analysis, the course bridges theoretical understanding with practical application.

A central component of the course is the study of ʿuluww al-isnād, with emphasis on identifying the highest extant chains that retain verifiable samāʿ in the later generations. Students will explore how such chains are preserved, authenticated, and transmitted, engaging with real examples from the scholarly tradition.

Special attention is given to tracing transmission pathways through major later figures, particularly Shāh Walī Allāh al-Dihlawī, whose works serve as a cornerstone in connecting earlier and later isnād traditions, as well as al-Amīr al-Kabīr and other pivotal transmitters. This allows students to situate themselves within a broader historical continuum of knowledge transmission.

The course concludes with a practical demonstration of living chains, including a detailed presentation of transmission routes leading to the Shamāʾil of Imām al-Tirmidhī. This final component provides students with a concrete understanding of how isnād operates not merely as a historical artifact, but as a living and continuous tradition.
