The Author:
Ibn Hishām al-Anṣārī (708–761 AH / 1309–1360 CE) was a prominent Egyptian linguist, grammarian, and scholar of the Arabic language during the Mamlūk era. Revered for his precision, clarity, and independent thought, he played a foundational role in shaping Arabic grammar and linguistic studies.
He studied under leading scholars such as Shihāb al-Dīn al-Ḥarrānī and Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Sarrāj, excelling in syntax (naḥw), morphology (ṣarf), and Qur’anic recitation. Ibn Hishām developed a structured curriculum for Arabic grammar learners and authored both introductory and advanced texts.
His most significant works include:
- Qaṭr al-Nadā wa-Ball al-Ṣadā and its commentary (The book we will be studying in this course)
- Shudhūr al-Dhahab
- Awḍaḥ al-Masālik
- Al-Iʿrāb ʿan Qawāʿid al-Iʿrāb
- Mughni al-Labīb, his grammatical masterpiece and a key to Qur’anic exegesis
Sharh Qaṭr al-Nadā:
The book we will study in this course, *Sharh Qaṭr al-Nadā wa-Ball al-Ṣadā*, is one of the most renowned and widely taught texts in the field of Arabic grammar (naḥw). This commentary is known for its accessibility, making it easier for students to grasp the foundational issues of Arabic syntax.
The book addresses essential grammatical issues (masā’il), foundational principles of Arabic syntax, and at times, broader linguistic principles related to the Arabic language.
Notably, the author was not one to merely follow the views of those who preceded him out of reverence for their stature. Rather, he engaged deeply with the material, conducting thorough research and arriving at independent conclusions. Having attained a level of expertise that enabled him to perform ijtihād (Independent reasoning) in Arabic grammar. And this is one of the benefits of this book, as you will find critiques of earlier opinions, and presentations of opinions that are more precise and thorough.
After going through this work, students will be equipped with the ability to comfortably understand more complicated texts such as Alfiyyah (ٱلْأَلْفِيَّة), and Kāfiyah (ٱلْكَافِيَّة) of Ibn al-Ḥājib.
