Course Overview:

The science of Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl (الْجَرْحُ وَالتَّعْدِيلُ, al-jarḥ wa al-taʿdīl) stands as one of the most essential disciplines within ʿIlm al-Ḥadīth. It provides the methodological framework through which scholars evaluate the reliability, integrity, and precision of narrators (ruwāt), thereby preserving the authenticity of the Prophetic tradition.

This course offers a structured and in-depth study of the principles governing narrator criticism, guided by the well-regarded work Ḍawābiṭ al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-ʿAbd al-Laṭīf. Students will engage with both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of the discipline, gaining insight into how classical scholars assessed narrators and resolved complex evaluative differences.
