The Intellectual Legacy of Imām al-Juwaynī and Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī

Imām al-Juwaynī (الإِمَام الجُوَينِي) – Imām al-Ḥaramayn

Imām al-Juwaynī (d. 478 AH / 1085 CE), famously known as Imām al-Ḥaramayn (إِمَام الحَرَمَيْن), was a leading authority in Usūl al-Fiqh (أُصُول الفِقْه) and ʿIlm al-Kalām (عِلْم الكَلَام – Islamic theology) during the 11th century.

• His most influential work, al-Burhān fī Uṣūl al-Fiqh (البُرْهَان في أُصُول الفِقْه), is considered a seminal text in Islamic legal theory, showcasing a highly structured and rigorous approach to jurisprudential methodology.

• A teacher of the great Imām al-Ghazālī (الغَزَالِي), al-Juwaynī played a critical role in shaping later developments in both jurisprudence and theology within the Shāfiʿī tradition and beyond.

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī (جَلَال الدِّين المَحَلِّي)

Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī (d. 864 AH / 1459 CE) was a prominent 15th-century Egyptian scholar best known for his contributions to Qur’ānic exegesis and Shāfiʿī jurisprudence.

• He is most famous for co-authoring Tafsīr al-Jalālayn (تَفْسِير الجَلَالَيْن), a concise and accessible commentary on the Qur’ān, which he began and was later completed by his student, Imām al-Suyūṭī (السُّيُوطِي).

• In addition to his exegetical work, al-Maḥallī wrote important legal and theological texts that are still taught in traditional Islamic curricula.
